Mountaineers suck on gas, but they are a nice. comfortable ride. If you like it and can afford a high fuel bill go for it. They are big and powerful. If I could afford the gas I would get one.

The wife and I have owned a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer family car with 4.0L V-6 for five years now. We do not tow with this vehicle and find it mechanically reliable and spacious enough to haul three children around town. The only complaint we have with this model year is the poorly engineered wheel bearings at all four corners from the factory. They seem to last approximately 25,000 to 50,000 miles per bearing and when replaced by the dealer, they receive re-engineered and updated part numbers. If they have not already been replaced, expect to replace at least one noisy bearing at $200.00 per bearing. Other than the wheel bearing issue, it has been a very reliable vehicle!

Purchasing an older vehicle, such as the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer, makes good financial sense. You're able to avoid the steep depreciation rates that occur with brand new vehicles.

2002 are known to have differential and transfer case issues - just look up on line. I have a 2002 and just had to replace both at the same time @ 100,000 miles. $3400 Seems 1998-2002 models are all affected.

I was really shocked does it really cost $3400 to change?
