So I've got a '68 Mercury Montego with a virtually stock 302 and transmission. The engine's virtually flawless, but her age has me worried. I'd like to pull the engine and transmission and rebuild them at my leisure, but I'd like to have something with more 'oomph' behind it for a while. I know the '68 Montego was offered with up to a 390, but can I cram something even bigger under that hood? In order to do so, yes, I'm going to virtually rebuild the car. New transmission, rear end, suspension, axles, so on and so forth. So how far can I go before I can't modify her back to stock?
