what is wrong with my 98 mercury grand marquis?

not always,and only when the engine is cold. i have trouble with the idle,but if i give it a little gas and time to warm up it runs fine.what is causing this?and why does it only do this every 4 or 5 days?

If it's happening only every 4-5 days now then it will probably start happening more often untill it happens all the time.
It sound to me like the choke. I'm not sure what kind you have on there but for any car made in the 90's and up there are soooo many 'brain' like things.
I'd take it in for a 'checkup'. Or just sell it and get a better car.
Really, it sounds like it's time for this car to go bye-bye. And it's giving you plenty of warning before it takes that big dump.
