...4000 rpm. help please? i have to put it in nuetral and keep the gas on in order for the car to stay at idle.

Do a full tune-up. Oil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and ALL the filters. Sounds like the air filter's clogged. Could also be the fuel filter, that should be changed as well. Don't forget to check for vacuum leaks (spray all your vacuum lines with carb cleaner while the engine's running, when you get to a leak, the engine's sound will change). These symptoms could be indicative of nearly anything, but these are the most common problems based on your description.
