Default Hood Pop Up

When opening the hood on my 1977 Mercury it does not pop open so the I can reach in and unlatch it. So I am forced to pry it up.

What can I do to remedy this?
There is no typical pop-up spring on the hood.

I raised the hood bumpers on both sides and it seems to have solved the problem. The hood sits about 1/8" higher than it should but at least I can open the dang thing now. Hard to believe that they expect that little spring on the latch to lift the hood...WOW!

What kind of shape is the spring in? If it compresses downward too easily then the upward force may be too little to push the hood. You may be able to simply replace the spring with a slightly shorter, stiffer one. The hood is lighter than you might think. I just took mine off and expected a struggle but it was very light.

Also check the two gas filled struts near the hood hinges. These go bad pretty quickly. Easy to replace and available at your local auto store. 15 minute job. Just remember to only do one at a time...
