Default 2002 Mercury Mountaineer AWD repair

Hi all. I just bought a used 2002 Mountaineer and took it to a shop to get new tires and the front end aligned.

Turns out the front drive shaft isn't even connected. This is a second vehicle that I plan to use just to haul around stuff every now and then.

I'd like to eventually get the AWD repaired. Am I going down a rabbit hole here? The car's blue book value is only ~$2K. Would I be spending more money than that to get it fixed?

Any opinions would be appreciated. Lesson learned here is to have a mechanic look a car over before you buy it used from a private seller.
