Default Power Steering fault

Good morning,

I have a 2010 Mercury Milan Premier and I am having a power steering fault. This started a couple of months ago where I would get a message on the dash stating 'power steering assist fault' I was able to remedy this issue by parking the car and shutting it off and I would regain power steering again. This went on for a couple of weeks off and on occasionally.

A couple weeks ago the system stopped working all together. In addition there is an additional message on the information center stating 'service traction control'. I have done a fair amount of research but I am coming up short.

- I have read that the ecu needs a reflash
- I have checked the fuses
- possible electronic power steering assist motor is bad
- rack and pinion needs to be replace

The problem here is I am at the mercy of mechanics in another country right now (Italy). They all have told me that I need to order the part from America and get it shipped here and they can fix it. (They have told me that it is the power steering motor) But I don't have a part number to go off of anywhere or if this is even the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Additionally, Ford has opened an investigation for the 'same exact' issue but has yet to deem it a recall item.

Thank you in advance.
