Default won't start - gauges jumping crazy

i have a 2009 mariner hybrid that just started doing something really crazy. i parked the car for about 5 minutes and when i came back to start it there was nothing other than the gauges jumping crazily (RPM, MPH & gas) while making a clicking noise, and would not start. after trying a few times i slapped the top of the dashboard over the gauges and everything reset and i was able to start the car. this has happened once since then and am not sure what to be looking at? it was stated that it may possibly be the car battery (not the electric battery)?

also, i noticed that before this happens, when driving, all of the gauges will stop ex: RPM's at 20, MPH at 20, gas gauge not accurate.
