Default California catalytic converter advice

Hello-

I have a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer 4.6L with check engine light on. Mechanics say the code is a bad catalytic converter.

The dealer wants $2,000.00 for a new catalytic converter and I have been unable to find a CA compliant catalytic converter. I have been told the smog shops physically look at the catalytic converter for the correct stamp so as far as I know getting a non compliant one installed is not an option.

Has anybody had any luck finding an after market catalytic converter that is legal in CA?

I can have an aftermarket catalytic converter that is not CA compliant shipped to a mechanic I know is AZ and have it installed. Has anybody had any luck at a smog that does not look for the stamp on the catalytic converter?

Any advice on what to do is greatly appreciated.
